Written & Illustrated by: Anthony Browne
One Gorilla is a beautifully illustrated counting book featuring many different types of primates. After counting from one gorilla to ten lemurs Browne includes himself and his readers as members of one large family. Each number is beautifully represented by detailed drawings of different types of primates. The exquisite illustrations are reminiscent Chuck Close portraits with a slightly fuzzy character that makes the animals’ fur look soft enough to pet. This book celebrates individual diversity within a larger family. Several of the images feature individuals with different colored fur and facial expressions suggesting various personality traits as well. Lil Bug likes to jump to the lemurs and point to the one that has blue eyes just like her. The books ends with a two page spread featuring about two dozen people of various ages, races, genders all standing together, all one family.
