Young Susie Mae is thrilled when her Aunt Martha says she looks just like Mama. Susie Mae even tries to do all the chores like Mama, milking cows, collecting eggs, picking strawberries and getting lunch ready. But through the spilled milk, broken eggs, and berry stains she learns that there is more to her mother than what she looks like and what she can do. More importantly she is “ever patient and kind.” Just Like Mama is set on an Amish farm and Lil Bug loves asking about the characters clothing, horse and buggy and of course the animals, all of which are beautifully illustrated by Cheri Bladholm. While the book ends on a religious note, we tend to skip over it and just talk about trying to be best person you can.
Lil Bug says: She washes her hands and spills some stew and says “ouch!” I like the story. It’s a cool book.
